Few humans are born with perfect facial features, with the nose often being the primary source of the imperfection. Fortunately, rhinoplasty is available to change the size or shape of the nose. There are actually two principal types of “nose jobs,” which are differentiated by the terms open and closed.
The Principles of Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty has become a popular method of altering the appearance of the nose through the surgical removal of bone and tissue or, in some cases, the adding of material that has been taken from other parts of the body. Though usually employed for cosmetic reasons, rhinoplasty may be necessary to resolve breathing problems or to correct congenital defects.
Understanding the Differences
Both the open and closed methods of rhinoplasty will often involve numerous incisions inside the nose, but the difference between the two is where the initial incision is made. In the open technique, the plastic surgeon makes an incision in the small area of the nose between the two nostrils. This portion of skin is then raised, making it possible for the surgeon to reach the interior of the nose and its passages. In the closed technique, the initial incisions are made directly inside the nostrils.
The Advantages of Each Method
Open rhinoplasty allows for greater access to the inside of the nose, which may be needed to achieve extensive shaping on the outside or major changes on the inside. The open method can actually reduce the risk of major disruptions to the cartilage inside the nose. Although it will leave some external scarring, the incision will not be obvious and should in any case heal over time. Closed rhinoplasty will leave no visible scars, but it also allows for fewer opportunities for the surgeon to make major changes in either the interior or exterior portions of the nose. However, the technique is useful in making minor structural adjustments, providing that the nose itself is not too large and its tip is properly shaped. Additionally, the closed technique will normally involve shorter operating and recovery times.
Which Technique is Best for You?
Selecting the best method of rhinoplasty will depend upon many other factors, including your specific desires and the anatomy of your nose. A consultation with our medical staff can help you determine which technique is best for you.
